RHINOCEROS was established in 1998 as Clean Streets Ltd, carrying out the application of the Duncan Maclean Anti-Flyposting system to street furniture in towns and cities across the UK, the Netherlands and overseas in New York and Buenos Aires. We cleaned, prepared and repainted the 100 foot lighting masts at the Dover Harbour Western Docks. Much of our work was for Transport for London removing posters, stickers and graffiti from street furniture on the major routes through the capital and applying the anti-flyposting coatings.
In 2006 we applied Keim Granital paint to the soffits of the A-40 elevated section over Wood Lane in west London.
In 2007 we applied Keim Lasur paints to the elevated A-40 soffits from Portobello Road to Ladbroke Grove and along Thorpe Close and we undertook the cleaning and maintenance of pedestrian subways in central London. Over the term of the 8 year contract we replaced damaged ceramic tiling, manhole covers, drainage channels, stair nosings and carried out a high pressure steam clean of the principal subways in central London every six weeks.
In 2009 and 2010 we undertook the repainting of 23 bridges for Hampshire County Council. We also repainted Lochend and Restalrig bridges in Edinburgh.In 2010 we were asked by Tishmann Speyer to construct a new subway at Aldgate Place. In 2010 the soffits of the M40 Westway over Bramley Road and St Marks Road were also painted with Keim Lasur paints. About the same time we removed all graffiti from retaining walls and underpasses along the M40 for Carillion. In Nottingham we undertook the refurbishment of power cable poles on a section of the tram line. In 2011 we repainted Kingsbridge in Swallowfield for Wokingham District Council. In London we undertook the application anti-flyposting coatings to all the street furniture on the Shoreditch Triangle for Transport for London.
In 2011-12 on behalf of Transport for London we carried out a major rebuilding and refurbishment of the pedestrian subways at Monument Underground station for the Corporation of London. This was completed in July 2012 in time for the opening of the Olympic Games. While working at Monument we also cleaned and refurbished the Blackfriars Underpass just a short distance away. Meanwhile another team were applying anti graffiti coatings to steps and seating around the Olympic Stadium at Stratford. RHINOCEROS were called in to protect walls, benches, stairs, ramps and street furniture with anti-graffiti coatings to ensure the legacy continues to look its best.
In 2012 a team of 12 blast cleaners and painters employed and supervised by Rhinoceros completed the repainting of 12000 sq m of steel on the Queen Elizabeth 11 Bridge in Belfast in time for the centenary celebrations of the launching of the Titanic a few hundred yards away from this bridge.
In 2013 we renewed the anti skid surfacing on Holdenhurst Footbridge and repainted the entire structure. We were awarded a contract to build a new £250,000 operations centre for TfL and Ringway Jacobs. We were also awarded a renewed 8 year contract to provide construction and maintenance services to Transport for London. In March Eurovia awarded us a contract to carry out repairs to the 1914 Farcet Bridge south of Peterborough. In Hampshire we undertook the repainting of the Finchampstead, Coxheath and Hedge End bridges.
Rhinoceros was awarded the National Railway Heritage Awards 2013 trophy for Craft Skills for our completed restoration project at Monument Tube station subways. We were nominated for the First Group Craft Skills Award, along with projects at Glasgow Central Station and Marylebone Station.
In 2014 we carried out further works in the Olympic Park applying Keim Paints to climbing walls and other distinctive structures. In Maidenhead we refurbished two pedestrian subways in the town centre. Meanwhile in London we were awarded a contract to renew the concrete facade to Wood Green Library. On the A10 in north London Rhinoceros installed innovative iridescent decorative panels to a busy pedestrian subway.
In 2015 -16 we carried out major refurbishment works to pedestrian subways under the A10 and to a footbridge over this busy road in Enfield north London. In south west London, Wandsworth we carried out concrete and drainage repairs to subways beneath the Wandsworth Roundabout.
In 2016 Rhinoceros started work on the repair of the brick viaduct and the steel swingbridge across Folkestone Harbour. This job required a dozen experienced bricklayers and a dozen blast cleaners and industrial painters, up to 6 welders and took over 6 months to complete at a cost just under £600,000.00 This job was completed in the summer of 2017.
Meanwhile in London we replaced failed stair nosings on the Gainsborough Road footbridge over the A12 in Leytonstone. In November 2017 we started work on the refurbishment of the Harold Court Subway under the A12 in Romford. Also in November 2017 we started work on refurbishing and constructing new offices for Ringway Jacobs and TfL at Harling House in Southwark.
The works to Harold Court Road subway including a new approach ramp, new anti-skid coatings, concrete and tiling repairs and painting were completed in March 2018. In May 2018 we started work on the restoration of 6 19th century cast iron bridges in Enfield Town.
In March 2019 we installed new steel pump room doors to the Upper Thames Street Tunnel for Transport for London. We carried out repairs to the iconic Vauxhall Bus station canopy to straighten and refix stainless steel roof sheets. In April we started work to refurbish the Millfield House footbridge in Enfield this included a new FRP deck and complete repainting.We carried out repair and repainting works to Conduit Lane flyover and Smeaton Road RSAD bridge for Enfield Council Highway Structures Team. We returned to the Olympic Park for Eurovia to enhance road safety beneath the stadium by painting 33 concrete pillars with a bright yellow paint.
In November work started to rebuild parapet walls and install new coping stones on a bridge over The Chine in Enfield. This work was extended in 2020 to include the rebuilding of one wing wall, blast cleaning and repainting of steel support beams.
In December we started work on a project for Enfield Council to repair a number of bridges over the New River. This involved concrete repairs to reinforced concrete beams working from a shallow punt on the river. This work continued until March 2020.For Transport for London we replaced over 400 feet of oak fencing rails in Putney Vale on the A3.
In February 2020 Rhinoceros Ltd were awarded Silver certification by Constructionline. In May we carried out concrete repairs, expansion joint sealant removal and repainting of soffits and retaining walls on Waterloo Road around the Imax Cinema. At Gants Hill in Essex for Transport for London we cleaned and repainted all the street furniture, subway entrance retaining walls and all parapets and guard railing around this busy A12 junction. In Brixton we cleaned and applied anti-flyposting coatings to all street furniture and bridge supports. This work was carried out at night i order to reduce contact with the public during the Covid pandemic. For Eurovia one of our teams repaired and repainted a retaining wall in Southend to provide a smart carpark for Tops FIreplaces.
In August 2020 we started work on the Lea Navigation bridge which carries the Lea Valley Road over the Lea river at Ponders End. Surface preparation, cleaning and repainting of bearings and beams. Meanwhile back in Southend Rhinoceros painters were applying Thames barrier coatings to street furniture and Corten lighting columns for Eurovia. In October we carried out concrete repairs to abutment walls at Ponders End to install corrosion protection zinc anodes using Sika Monotop 412n repair mortar.
In December we went underground to carry out repairs in two culverts beneath the Asda store In Edmonton.
We then returned to the New River to carry out extensive repairs to the Barrowell Green Bridge which was showing signs of serious corrosion to number of the concrete beams. This work continued into 2021.
In March 2021 our painting team swung into action for Tranpsort for London painting street furniture at Tottenham Hale, Holloway, Islington, Dalston, Victoria, Battersea, Clapham, Wandsworth and the Finchley Road. In April the bridge team completed the repainting of Newbury Avenue Bridge in Enfield. We then took on the restoration of some historic steel and cast iron fencing in Albany Park. In October we were awarded a contract for the surface preparation and painting of two bridges over Pymmes Brook in Enfield by Kenson Highways.
